Try not to be fooled by the steady purr emitting from the engine of the Camaro SS. This high performance muscle car is a panther on wheels! Here's the skinny on of one of the most exhilarating muscle cars ever made.

The Camaro SS series evolved from the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. It was primarily designed as a performance package for the original 1967 model. The Camaro SS Super Sport series was available in both hardtop and convertible body styles and produced in two generations: 1967-1972 and 1996-2002.

The 1967 Camaro SS was the first model in the Camaro SS series. The 1967 model contained a 350 (5.7L) V8 engine with a 396 cid block. Its features included non functional air inlets on the hood, SS badging on the grille, gas cap, horn button, special bumble bee striping and a blacked out grille.

The 1968 Camaro SS experienced very minor changes. The side vent windows were removed and Astro Ventilation system was added. Additional new features included chrome hood inserts, a 396 cid (6.5L) 350 hp big block engine option, side marker lights, a pointed front grille and divided rear taillights.

Camaros SS aficionados considered the 1969 Camaro SS to be the greatest model produced. It was nicknamed the Hugger due its sportier look achieved through its many redesigns. The 1969 model featured a heavy V cant grille, deeply inset headlights and new sheet metal. Additional features included new door shins, rear quarter panels, a redesigned dash and comfier seats.

The 1969 model also came with new performance options. The 427 cid V8 was added as well as 4-wheel disc brakes, called RPO JL8. The latter greatly improved braking capability by adapting a 4-piston break components used on the Corvette. The 1969 model was also available in a variety of colors, one of the most popular being the 1969 fathom green SS Camaro.

The Camaros SS continued to undergo an assortment of redesigns until 1972. The 1972 Chevy Camaro SS was the last model of the first generation of the SS series. After suffering several setbacks, the 1972 Chevy Camaro SS was almost shelved due to production disruptions caused by a GM assembly plant strike.

Sadly, 2002 marked the last year of production for the second generation of the Camaro SS series. Chevrolet celebrated the 2002 Camaro SS 35th Anniversary with the release of a special edition. The celebration car was a Z28 SS Coupe with special graphics, logos and striping.

Many models of the SS series are currently for sale through the Internet and classifieds. The Internet is a great source for finding vintage models. Plus, the Internet is superior to newspaper and print ads when it comes to providing high quality Camaro SS pictures.

Camaro enthusiasts have nothing to fear from the assumed demise of the SS series. GM recently announced its plans to release a new version of the Camaro SS. According to GM Chairman and CEO, Rick Wagoner, the new model will be a modernized version of the classic 1969 Camaro SS. The new model will be available for purchase in early 2009.
